If the FW tranciever is damaged, that won't make any difference, and a trip back to Focusrite for a FW chip replacement is probably likely.Dual Unit SupportIt is now possible to run two Saffire interfaces connected to a single computer. The "fix" is to remove all power from the FW device for about 24 hours (unplug it) to allow the stored charge to dissipate. It's possible for FW transcievers to be "latched" by a stored charge on a data line. There is one "long-shot" you can safely try. ![]() The "adapter" itself may not have damaged the FW transciever, but connecting or disconnecting a cable to it, may have caused damage. Just connecting or disconnecting the FW cable from a powered USB port (connecting while the computer is on) potentially can damage a FW interface if the signal line connects before the ground (which is likely to happen). I'd call or email Focusrite support for their opinion ASAP. The adapters can work in a few situations to provide DC charging current for portable devices, and in the past there have been a few FW to USB DV (Digital Video) one-way adapters (expensive - several hundreds of $- adapter boxes full of electronics) that enabled some FW video cameras to connect via USB.įor connecting a bi-directional audio interface they are totally useless, and are in fact essentially a complete fraud.īecause of the completely different power on the two systems, and because of the fragile nature of FW data interfaces (simply "hot-swapping" a FW connection can "fry" a FW transciever) it's very likely that your FW/USB adapter damaged the FW chip in the Saffire Pro 24. Firewire ports typically are powered at 25 Volts but may carry anything from 9 V to as much as 30 volts at up to 8 watts.įW and USB are dramatically different in so many ways, that the simple inexpensive cable adapters just don't (can't) work. USB-2 ports carry +5 volts at 0.5A with power limited to 2.5 watts. USB is a "half-duplex" protocol, while Firewire is "full-duplex". ![]() USB-2 requires a "bus-master" to control data transfer, and Firewire uses a peer to peer connection. The data protocols are different, and the operating voltage on the ports are different. Simple molded or cable "USB to Firewire adapters" generally won't work and most manufacturers (including Focusrite) warn customers against using them. If the interface worked perfectly before you connected it to that "FW/USB adapter", and now it doesn't, you probably have already pinpointed your problem. It probably won't help, but you should at least confirm that the driver is OK. First, try deleting and then re-installing the Focusrite driver. ![]()
